Call for Abstracts: Workshop „Valuation and Exploitation of Work(ers) at the Bottom and the Margins of Labour Markets“

„Future of Work“, Congress of the Swiss Sociological Association 2019 Neuchâtel (Switzerland), September 10-12, 2019

As part of the annual congress of the Swiss Sociological Association 2019 on „The Future of Work“, taking place in Neuchâtel (Switzerland) September 10-12, 2019, an interdisciplinary workshop on „Valuation and Exploitation of Work(ers) at the Bottom and the Margins of Labour Markets“ is being organised.

The workshop is based on the assumption that what happens at the bottom and the margins of labour markets often anticipates general trends, and focuses on devalued categories of labour and workers in these segments. We welcome empirical and theoretical papers dealing with the transformation, re-valuation and exploitation of different kinds of marginalised labour. Of particular concern are the interactions between the so-called “first” and the “second” or even “third” labour markets, with the latter often being regarded as outside the “real” productive economy. From a social-legal point of view we are also interested in the emergence and the actual contract design of new and hybrid legal (work) relationships, affecting (human) rights, obligations and the entitlement to welfare benefits and access to social security in general. Do the new forms of valuation and exploitation in the long run affect how we think about and legally organise workers rights also in the first labour market?

The complete Call for Abstracts can be found here.  Abstracts can be submitted until April 20, 2019 and should not be longer than 2’000 characters.

Please also consult the website of the congress, where you can find a preliminary program and other crucial information. Do not hesitate to contact the organisers directly if you have any questions.
